Confirmation
Ministry
Within the
ELCA - of which we are a part - confirmation is defined as follows:
"Confirmation
is a pastoral and educational ministry of the church which helps the baptized
person - through
word and sacrament - to identify more deeply with the Christian community
and participate more fully in its mission."
The Confirmation
Ministry program of the congregation is a two-year program offered for
seventh and eighth graders in preparation for affirming their baptisms.
The program includes:
- Weekly classes on Wednesday
evenings from September through May that cover contemporary perspectives
on biblical material, the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments and the
Apostles' Creed.
- The current curriculum
is Here I Stand from Augsburg Fortress publishers.... a curriculum that
utilizes a reference book, The Lutheran Handbook, as well as
downloadable lessons in a variety of formats, including PowerPoint presentations,
video and audio clips and handouts.
The Confirmation program
also includes:
- Field trips to worship
sites of other traditions (e.g. Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Jewish)
and to mission sites beyond the local congregation (e.g. Dane County
Jail, UW-Madison Lutheran Campus Center, Meriter Hospital)
- Completion of sermon/worship
reflections, service hours, and memorizations
- Alternating yearly half-day
events on "Choices": (faith-based decision making)
and "The Sacraments."
- A concluding personal
faith statement
